Poultry record keeping that actually gets used
Record six things every day: birds alive, deaths, feed issued, water availability, eggs collected and anything unusual you noticed. Add costs and sales weekly. Five minutes a day of records will tell you about a problem two or three days before you would have seen it in the birds.

The daily six
- Birds alive at the start of the day.
- Deaths and culls, with a short note on what you saw.
- Feed issued in kilograms — issued, not estimated.
- Water: was supply continuous, and were drinkers clean?
- Eggs collected, split into good, cracked and dirty for layers.
- Observations: behaviour, droppings, sounds, weather.
Weekly and per-cycle records
- Average bird weight from a sample of birds.
- Purchases: feed, chicks, vaccines, litter, medicines.
- Sales: birds, eggs, manure, with price achieved.
- Vaccinations and treatments, including batch numbers and withdrawal dates.
Turning records into decisions
- Feed per tray of eggs, or feed per kilogram of live weight, shows you whether feed is working.
- Daily mortality trend warns you before a problem becomes an outbreak.
- Cost per bird sold tells you whether the cycle is worth repeating.
- A written history means a vet or expert can help you in minutes instead of guessing.
Make it stick

How long should I keep records?
Keep at least the last three cycles. Comparing cycles is how you find out whether a change actually worked.
