How this calculation works and what it assumes
- Lay percentage = eggs collected ÷ live hens × 100.
- Well-managed commercial layers usually peak between 85 and 95 percent, then decline slowly after peak.
- Compare against your own records and your breed guide rather than a single national figure.
How the calculation works
If 300 hens give 255 eggs, that is 255 ÷ 300 × 100 = 85 percent. Recording this every day turns egg collection into a real management tool: you see a drop within a day instead of a week.
What good looks like
- Production usually starts around 18 to 20 weeks and climbs quickly.
- Peak production for well-managed commercial layers typically sits between 85 and 95 percent.
- A slow decline after peak is normal.
- A sudden fall of more than about 10 points in a few days is a signal to investigate.

Common questions
Is 70 percent production good?
It depends on flock age. For a flock at peak it is low and worth investigating. For an old flock past 70 weeks it can be reasonable.
