Feed is usually 60 to 70 percent of the cost of a broiler cycle, so small feed savings move profit more than anything else.
How this calculation works and what it assumes
- Prices vary widely by market and season — use your own quotes for a real decision.
- Family labour is often left out of farm costs; include it if you want a true picture.
- This estimates one cycle only and excludes housing and equipment already owned.
Where broiler profit is won or lost
- Feed is normally 60 to 70 percent of the cost, so wastage matters more than any other single item.
- Mortality removes revenue while the cost of those birds has already been paid.
- Selling weight and market timing often move the result more than price haggling.
- Costs that farmers forget: transport, litter, power, water, vaccines and their own labour.
