How this calculation works and what it assumes
  • Intake depends on breed, age, temperature and feed energy.
  • Hot weather reduces intake; cold weather increases it.
  • A 4 percent wastage allowance is included.

What changes intake

  • Age: pullets eat less than hens in full lay.
  • Temperature: hot houses cut intake; cold weather increases it.
  • Feed energy: a denser ration means fewer grams for the same nutrition.
  • Body size: heavier breeds eat more.
  • Wastage: shallow, overfilled feeders lose feed to the litter every day.

Keeping feed cost under control

  • Fill feeders no more than two thirds full.
  • Raise feeders to the level of the birds' backs.
  • Buy from a consistent, reputable source rather than switching for small savings.
  • Track feed used per tray of eggs — that single number shows whether feed is working for you.

Should I restrict feed to save money?
