How this calculation works and what it assumes
- Densities used: broilers on litter 10/m², layers on litter 6/m², layers in cages 15/m², improved kienyeji 5/m², brooding chicks 40/m².
- In hot climates or poorly ventilated houses, keep fewer birds per square metre.
- Overcrowding is one of the most common causes of poor growth, pecking and heat stress.
Why density matters more than farmers expect
- Crowded birds grow unevenly because the weaker ones cannot reach feed.
- Litter gets wet faster, ammonia rises and respiratory problems follow.
- Heat builds up and mortality rises on hot days.
- Pecking and injuries increase.
